How to get started with Coloring

01/14/2022

Getting started with coloring can maybe make you feel a bit silly, confused, or even a little embarrassed to begin coloring as an adult, then put those fears to the side.

Adult coloring is simple, it’s fun, and itís beneficial to your mind and your health. Getting started is the hardest part. Once you realize just how peaceful and calm coloring makes you feel, youíll be recommending it to everyone you know as a way of relaxing and focusing on what’s good in life.

Buy a Few Supplies

You don’t need anything fancy to begin coloring. You can get a piece of blank paper, a crayon, or some colored pencils, and you can color. You don’t need a picture because you can draw something and color it. Even if it’s just your name in big bubble letters, you’re coloring. You don’t need much of anything to color as an adult. You can buy what you want or feel you need. Know that there is no right or wrong way to color as an adult.

Join the Creative Coloring Membership

If you want to get a little more serious about your coloring, you can always join a coloring membership, like the Coloring Creatives. Every month you will get coloring pages you can print at home! Your coloring pages will be themed based on holiday or season, have mandalas, patterns coloring pages, calendar pages, quote pates, puzzles such as crossword, sudoku, or word search!

Sit Down and Start

Keep in mind there is no one but you present while you color. You needn’t show your artwork to anyone if you donít feel comfortable doing so. All you need to do is sit down and color. Don’t let yourself feel self-conscious or strange about it. You’re the only one here, the only one looking at your work, and you are the only person judging yourself. Let that go and just color. Don’t worry about being perfect. Just worry about doing what you want to do to make the kind of art you want to make.

Focus on Coloring When You’re Overwhelmed

Do you recognize your body’s signs and what it’s trying to tell you about things? If you do, you probably recognize when you feel a bit overwhelmed or out of sorts. You know when you’re stressed or overworked, and you know you can do things to counteract that. Sometimes the best thing you can do for yourself is to sit back and take a break from what’s bothering you with a coloring book.

Coloring is inexpensive, it’s easy, and itís a great way to de-stress and unwind. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, this is a tool that can help you feel better about life by clearing your mind and allowing to you go feel more in control. Get started with coloring and see how well it works for you!

I was born in Bad Homburg, Germany. Growing up in foster care I spend a lot of time alone creating art or writing stories. In 1992, when I became pregnant, I discovered crochet and emersed myself in the craft. I also immigrated to the US and throughout the years, I explored various mediums of art – such as macrame, cross-stitch, and painting - while raising my kids. In 2005, I wanted to create my own wood beads and discovered the wood-burner and fell in love with it. It’s at the same time I had the nudge to start my handmade business part-time with the intention to be full-time someday.

But life derailed for a little while, as I became a special needs parent, enrolled in online college twice, and am the proud owner of a B.S. in Accounting and an M.S. in Mental Health Counseling – which eventually led me to start my coaching + consulting business.

Throughout the years I kept coming back to three mediums: coloring, crochet, and wood-burning, and am now balancing two businesses! With most of the kids creating their own lives and only the youngest left, I get to create art and teach people how to make art, while also helping people with their goals. It’s having the cake and eating it too!

I live in Central Virginia with tons of inspiration out of my backyard, the blue ridge mountains, and the events I attend!
